In the past, record companies gave away free promotional samples of their music in the form of compact discs, vinyl records and cassettes. These special records were usually marked with a cut out or a not for sale label.

Today, almost every musician has music available to stream and purchase. Some even operate without the need of a record label.

In between, there was a period when free digital samplers were available for download. However, this form of promotion is becoming scarce.
